Victron BMV-712 Smart Battery Monitor
The Victron BMV-712 is the industry-standard battery monitor for van builds, overlanding rigs, RVs, boats, and off-grid cabins. It gives you a real-time, accurate readout of what your battery bank is actually doing — voltage, current in and out, state of charge, and time remaining at the current load.
Key Features
- Built-in Bluetooth — monitor your battery bank from your phone using the free VictronConnect app
- State-of-charge readout — shows exactly how much usable capacity is left, not just voltage
- Bidirectional current tracking — measures both charging and discharging current via the included shunt
- Wide battery compatibility — works with lithium (LiFePO4), AGM, gel, and flooded lead-acid banks
- Programmable alarms and relay — trigger actions or warnings based on voltage or state-of-charge thresholds
- Two color options — classic grey/white or black to match your panel
What's in the Box
- BMV-712 monitor head with display
- 500A / 50mV shunt (the current sensor that wires into your negative battery cable)
- Communication and power cables

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the BMV-712 work with lithium (LiFePO4) batteries?
Yes. It works with LiFePO4, AGM, gel, and flooded lead-acid banks. Set your battery's capacity and charged-voltage parameters in the VictronConnect app and it tracks true state of charge accurately on lithium.
What's the difference between the BMV-712 and a Victron SmartShunt?
They measure exactly the same data. The BMV-712 includes a dash-mountable display head; the SmartShunt is app-only with no head. Choose the BMV-712 if you want an at-a-glance gauge on the wall, the SmartShunt if you're happy reading everything on your phone.
Does the BMV-712 have Bluetooth?
Yes — Bluetooth is built in. Monitor voltage, current, and state of charge from the free VictronConnect app; no separate dongle needed.
What else can it monitor besides the main battery?
Its auxiliary input can track a second battery's voltage (such as your starter battery), the midpoint voltage of a series bank, or battery temperature with the optional sensor.
What size battery bank does it support?
The included 500A / 50mV shunt handles continuous current up to 500A, battery capacity is programmable from 1 to 9999 Ah, and it runs on 12V, 24V, and 48V systems — so it covers everything from a single 100Ah van bank to a large off-grid array.
How is the BMV-712 installed?
The shunt goes on the negative battery rail — every load and charge source connects to the load side of the shunt so it sees all current. The head unit drops into a standard 52 mm gauge hole. Our System Build Helper shows exactly where the shunt sits in a full wiring diagram.
