Can You Charge a Portable Power Station From Your Car? (12V Charging Guide)

Short answer: yes — almost every portable power station can charge from your vehicle's 12V cigarette-lighter socket. But car charging is the slowest way to fill one up, there's a connector catch that trips people up, and for a serious van or overland build there's a much better option. Here is exactly how it works, how fast it really is, and what you need to buy.
The one rule that governs all car charging
Your vehicle's accessory (cigarette-lighter) socket is fused at about 10–15 amps. At roughly 12 volts, that caps the charging power at around 90–120 watts — no matter how big or capable your power station is. That means:
- Every ~1 hour of driving puts back only about 100Wh.
- It's a top-up while you drive, not a full recharge.
- It's great for small units (roughly 300–1,000Wh). It's impractical for big ones — a 3,000Wh station would need 25+ hours of driving to fill from empty.
For anything more than casual topping up, charge from AC or solar — or step up to a DC-DC alternator charger (more on that below).
The connector catch (this trips everyone up)
The 12V / 10A car port on the front of most power stations is an OUTPUT — it powers 12V accessories, it does not charge the unit. Car charging goes IN through a different port:
- Jackery: through the 8mm DC input (the same port solar uses). You need a cigarette-lighter-to-8mm car charging cable, and Jackery sells it separately — it is not in the box.
- Small USB-C-only units (like the Jackery Explorer 300 v2): there is no 8mm port at all. You charge them with a 100W USB-C PD car charger into the USB-C input.
- BLUETTI and Pecron: a cigarette-lighter-to-DC cable into the solar/DC input.
Car charging, brand by brand
Jackery
Every Jackery Explorer and HomePower charges from a 12V car socket through the 8mm DC input — 12V systems only, not 24V. The car cable is sold separately. Jackery publishes a full car-charge time for two models: the Explorer 500 v2 at about 6 hours, and the Explorer 1000 v2 at about 12 hours. Larger units car-charge too, but Jackery doesn't publish a time — and at ~100W it's slow, so treat it as a road-trip top-up. The Explorer 300 v2 is the exception: it has no 8mm port and charges from the car via a USB-C car charger.
BLUETTI
BLUETTI units charge from a 12V or 24V socket with a car charging cable. The Apex 300, for example, takes 96W at 12V or 192W at 24V. For real van speed, BLUETTI steers you to its Charger 1 alternator hub (560W) rather than the cigarette-lighter cable.
Pecron
Pecron stations accept a native low-voltage DC input — the E3600LFP takes about 150W through its DC5521 input, and the F3000LFP has a 24V car input. For meaningful speed, both are designed to use Pecron's optional 500W DC-DC car charger.
The better way for van and overland builds: a DC-DC charger
If you actually live off your rig, a cigarette-lighter cable is the wrong tool. A DC-DC alternator charger wires to your starter battery and alternator and charges far faster (typically 25–50A), and — just as important — it protects your starter battery from being drained so you can't get stranded. It's the proper way to charge house power from the engine while driving.

- Topping up a small Jackery from the car: a Jackery 8mm car charging cable (sold separately).
- Charging a 300 v2 or other USB-C unit: a 100W USB-C PD car charger.
- Serious van/overland charging: a DC-DC alternator charger — the Jackery DC-DC Alternator Charger for a power station, or a Victron/Renogy DC-DC for a house bank.
